Reign Of Steel
Out for revenge, Charles besieges Morat. But the fortress commanded by Adrian von Bubenberg (the legend says that Charles and Adrian were close friends) manages to withstand the attacks of the Duke of Burgundy.
Charles knows that a large Swiss federal army is on the march, and lets his army stand guard and ready to fight for several hours every day. But just on 22 June 1476, the duke tells his troops to return early to their camp, as he no longer expects a Swiss attack. At this moment, when only 2000 Burgundians are left in their positions, the Swiss coincidentally attack. According to the chronicles, it had been raining all morning, but in the moment, in which the Swiss came out of the forest and attacked, the sky suddenly cleared up.
Charles positions are overrun, his hastily summoned troops smashed. Once again the Burgundian army is forced to flee. Charles refuses but is simply swept away by the fleeing current. The confederates follow the fugitives and the massacre begins. «As Cruel as in Morat» is still a well-known saying ...
Charles:
Hear my oath, almighty lord!
My reputation I’ll rebuild
I’ll scatter this peasant horde
Or leave my body on this field
Adrian, why is it you my friend
Commanding the defense
Here you will find your end
If you’re not coming to your senses
Bubenberg:
Charles, we knew this day would come
I live to defend this land
I will not surrender my home
Nor will I die by thy hand
Never would I draw my sword
Against you, this was my oath
But if you attack Morat
I’ll kill you I swear to god
Bubenberg:
Twelve days of siege at Morat, we held
Six times they attacked at night, we hit’em back
Cowards and traitors - judged by my iron hand
But now we’re done, if no one comes to our aid
Charles:
For six hours now we’ve been ready to fight
The morale is fading, the Swiss still hide
Return to camp, my brave knights
The Swiss cowards won’t attack today
Marching, hacking, slashing, cutting, dying
Murdering, stabbing, crying, bleeding, dying
Rain is fading, sun will shine
This must be a sacred sign
The Burgundians are not ready to fight
Surprise is on our side
Rain is fading, sun will shine
This must be a sacred sign
No Chance for them to win the day
And again they run away
Reign of steel!
Run for your life and hide
Reign of steel!
Swiss troops on all sides
Reign of steel!
Shattering them all
Reign of steel!
Run away or die
In the reign of steel!
Charles:
What’s this noise supposed to mean
All this pounding and all the screams
It can’t be, it can’t be the Swiss
We’re not ready, not ready anymore
Put on your armour, attack them at once
Draw your swords now, we still have a chance
Stand your ground and don’t run away
Cowards and traitors, we still can win the day
Marching, hacking, slashing, cutting, dying
Murdering, stabbing, crying, bleeding, dying
Rain is fading, sun will shine
This must be a sacred sign
The Burgundians are not ready to fight
Surprise is on our side
Rain is fading, sun will shine
This must be a sacred sign
No Chance for them to win the day
And again they run away
Reign of steel!
Run for your life and hide
Reign of steel!
Swiss troops on all sides
Reign of steel!
Shattering them all
Reign of steel!
Run away or die
In the reign of steel!
Charles:
Don’t flee, you cowards, don’t pull me away
Set me free, let me fight, let me die, let me stay
Let me march, let me lead, let me bleed, let me pray
Let me cry, let me battle, let me struggle, let me slay
NO! NO! NO!
